Elias Aguilar scored from long distance in the 65th minute and Herediano emerged with a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday at Cartago, Costa Rica, in the opening leg of a CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 series.

The second leg of the two-game, total-goal series is scheduled for March 12 in Carson, Calif.

On the decisive play, Herediano’s Haxzel Quiros stole the ball and passed to Aguilar, whose left-footed shot from 25 yards out nestled into the bottom left corner.

Herediano goalie Dany Carvajal and Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy each made four saves.

Whitecaps 1, Monterrey 1

Belal Halbouni headed home a late equalizer as host Vancouver salvaged a draw in the first leg against Monterrey.

The decisive contest is scheduled for March 12 in Torreon, Mexico. The contest was moved from Monterrey due to a scheduling conflict involving a concert by Shakira.

In the 86th minute, Ryan Gauld delivered a free kick from the left side into the 6-yard box, and Halbouni rose to knock it in.

Roberto De La Rosa gave Monterrey a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. He ran onto a long through ball from Erick Aguirre and went one-on-one with Whitecaps goalie Isaac Boehmer before rolling his shot off the far post and in.

Sounders 0, Cruz Azul 0

The teams played to a scoreless draw in Seattle to open their round of 16 series.

Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei stopped two shots, while Cruz Azul goalie Kevin Mier made one stop.

The second leg is scheduled for Tuesday in Mexico City.
