Cubs place Montgomery on IL, demote Edwards

The Chicago Cubs placed left-hander Mike Montgomery (lat strain) on the 10-day injured list and optioned right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. to Triple-A Iowa, the team announced.
Chicago recalled left-hander Kyle Ryan and right-hander Allen Webster from Iowa.
Right-hander Jen-Ho Tseng was designated for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot for Webster.
Montgomery has a 16.88 ERA over four appearances this season, allowing five earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings. The 29-year-old is 20-25 with a 3.68 ERA in 151 major league appearances (56 starts) with the Seattle Mariners (2015-16) and Chicago (2016-2019).
Edwards has a 32.40 ERA in four relief appearances this season, giving six earned runs in just 1 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old is 8-8 with a 3.36 ERA in 176 relief appearances for the Cubs (2015-19).
Ryan, 27, allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings in his lone appearance for Iowa this season. He is 8-6 with a 3.87 ERA in 86 career big league appearances (seven starts) with the Detroit Tigers (2014-17).
Webster, 29, is 8-6 with a 6.13 ERA in 31 appearances (23 starts) with the Boston Red Sox (2013-14), Arizona Diamondbacks (2015) and Cubs (2018). He pitched one scoreless inning for Iowa this season.
Tseng, 24, pitched in three major league games (two starts) for the Cubs (2017-18), going 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA.
