Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Jake Lamb could miss six weeks because of a Grade 2 left quadriceps strain, manager Torey Lovullo said Friday.
The team placed Lamb on the 10-day injured list Friday. He suffered the injury Wednesday while running out a double against the San Diego Padres.
Arizona recalled infielder Ildemaro Vargas from Triple-A Reno in advance of Friday night’s home opener against the Boston Red Sox.
Lamb is hitting .267 in five games. He has been splitting time at first base with Christian Walker and started at his former position of third base on Wednesday as Lovullo wanted to get both of their bats in the lineup.
Lamb, 28, is trying to bounce back from a 2018 season that was limited by an early shoulder injury that eventually required surgery in August. The left-handed hitter slugged 30 home runs in an All-Star season in 2017 and went deep 29 times in 2016.
Vargas, 27, has appeared in three games for Arizona this season, going 1-for-6 with a double. The switch-hitter has appeared in 29 games for the Diamondbacks since 2017, hitting .237 in 38 at-bats.
