Ducks fire Randy Carlyle

The Anaheim Ducks fired coach Randy Carlyle on Sunday after the club won just two of its past 21 games.
The organization also announced that general manager Bob Murray will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season.
“We thank Randy for everything he has done for the organization,” Murray said in a statement. “Leading the team to a Stanley Cup and three conference final appearances, he has accomplished so much in Anaheim. Difficult decisions need to be made when times are tough, and our play has clearly been unacceptable. We have a tradition of success in Anaheim and we need to get back to that.”
Saturday’s 6-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers was the team’s seventh in a row. The Ducks have been outscored 37-8 during the stretch.
Anaheim is 21-26-9 but was a solid 19-11-5 on Dec. 17 before the prolonged stretch of setbacks, beginning with a 12-game winless stretch.
Carlyle, 62, was in his second stint as Ducks’ coach. He went 384-256-96 with the franchise over parts of 10 seasons.
Carlyle became coach in 2005 and led the Ducks to the Stanley Cup title in his second season. The team made the playoffs in five of his six full seasons before he was fired 24 games into the 2011-12 campaign.
He later coached the Toronto Maple Leafs for parts of four seasons, going 91-78-19 before being fired in 2015.
Carlyle returned to the Ducks in 2016 and guided the team to more than 100 points in each of the past two seasons — including a berth in the 2017 Western Conference finals — before experiencing this season’s struggles.
Carlyle has an overall record of 475-334-115.
Murray signed a two-year extension as general manager through the 2021-22 campaign in December.
The 64-year-old Murray is a three-time finalist for NHL general manager of the year honors. He won the award for the 2013-14 campaign.
