Eagles: Carson Wentz trade not on table

Mum was quite literally the word from coach Doug Pederson on rumors the Philadelphia Eagles are ready to trade quarterback Carson Wentz.

In an end-of-season press conference via Zoom on Monday, Pederson’s audio trailed off and his reply to the question about his reportedly fractured relationship with Wentz was inaudible.

The joint presser also included general manager Howie Roseman, Pederson’s boss, who jumped in to respond.

“That is not anything we’re talking about right now,” Roseman said. “When you have players like that, they’re like fingers on your hand. You can’t imagine that they’re not part of you, that they’re not here. That’s how we feel about Carson.”

Report: Carson Wentz wants out

ESPN reported an offseason trade was likely because of what Wentz felt was a “fractured beyond repair” relationship with Pederson. Pederson made the decision in December to bench Wentz in favor of rookie second-round pick Jalen Hurts.

In the regular-season finale Sunday night against Washington, the Eagles used Nate Sudfeld as the backup to Hurts.

When Pederson’s microphone recovered on Monday, the coach seemed to indicate he wants to smooth any rough spots that emerged with Wentz.

“The relationship is good, it’s fine. It’s something we’re going to continue to build upon. I know Carson is disappointed,” Pederson said.

What market is there for Carson Wentz?

Whether the market will deem Wentz damaged goods is open for debate. He turned in a poor statistical season by his own standards.

Wentz completed just 57.4 percent of his pass attempts (251 of 437) for 2,620 yards and 16 touchdowns. He threw a league-leading 15 interceptions (tied with Denver’s Drew Lock) in 12 starts while averaging a career-low 218.3 passing yards per game. He also ran for five touchdowns.

But issues with the offensive line, which constantly addressed health and continuity concerns, and skill-position challenges cannot be entirely dismissed.

Wentz was sacked 50 times, the most in the league.

ESPN reported the asking price in a Wentz trade will be high but they are expected to receive multiple inquiries.

Now 28, Wentz was the No. 2 overall pick by the Eagles in the 2016 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $128 million extension with the Eagles in June 2019.
