Cloud9 defeated LYON 3-1 on Saturday in the upper-bracket semifinals to advance to the bracket final at the League of Legends’ League Championship Series Summer playoffs.
The upper-bracket final is slated for Sept. 27, with Cloud9 facing the winner of Sunday’s upper-bracket semifinal between Team Liquid and FlyQuest.
With the loss, LYON fell to the lower-bracket semifinal and will have an elimination match on Sept. 26. Shopify Rebellion are in the lower-bracket quarterfinals on Friday against an opponent to be determined, with the winner advancing to the semifinal versus LYON.
The LCS Summer Split is an eight-team event that began July 25 and will run through the finals in October. A seven-week round-robin regular season — in which all teams played each other once in a best-of-three match — set the field for the six-team playoffs.
The top two teams in the regular season — LYON and Team Liquid — advanced to the playoff semifinals, while the third- through sixth-place teams advanced to the quarters. The bottom two teams in the standings were eliminated.
The teams that claim the top three positions in the playoffs will advance to the $5 million LoL World Championship, scheduled for Oct. 15-Nov. 14. The fourth- and fifth-place teams will receive spots in the $223,000 Demacia Cup Global Invitational, to be held Oct. 3-17 in China.
On Saturday, Cloud9 won the first map in 41 minutes on red, LYON took the second in 43 minutes on red, and Cloud9 wrapped up with match with two more victories on red (44 minutes) and blue (25 minutes).
Park “Thanatos” Seung-gyu of South Korea paced Cloud9 with an 18-5-24 kill-death-assist ratio. Kang “Saint” Seong-in of South Korea was the only player on LYON not in a negative K-D ratio, with 10 kills and 10 deaths along with 16 assists.
