Cloud9 nip FlyQuest for LCS Spring Split’s top playoff seed

Cloud9 topped FlyQuest in a tiebreaker on Friday to emerge as the top team in the League Championship Series Spring Split group phase.

When Cloud9 (14-4) lost their final group match to Counter Logic Gaming (10-8) and then FlyQuest (14-4) defeated TSM (8-10), it created a tie for first place.

In the tiebreaker match, Cloud9 prevailed in 29 minutes on red against FlyQuest.

The rest of the Spring Split playoff field was sorted out after two tiebreaking games determined which of the teams that went 10-8 would finish third, fourth and fifth.

100 Thieves wound up winning three matches on the day to take third place, with Counter Logic Gaming taking fourth and Evil Geniuses fifth.

After closing the round-robin schedule with a 30-minute win on blue against Immortals (4-14), 100 Thieves notched a 40-minute victory on red against Evil Geniuses and then a 43-minute triumph on red vs. Counter Logic Gaming.

Evil Geniuses had lost their regularly scheduled Friday match, playing on blue, in 42 minutes against Team Liquid (8-10).

Counter Logic Gaming, playing on blue, took down Cloud9 in 38 minutes. FlyQuest, competing on blue, got past TSM in 31 minutes.

Golden Guardians (9-9) snagged the final playoff position despite losing in 40 minutes on red against last-place Dignitas (3-15).

The 10 teams in the top North American League of Legends circuit played every other team twice in the group phase. The first- through fourth-place teams now head to the upper-bracket semifinals of the double-elimination playoffs. The fifth- and sixth-place teams will enter the playoffs in the lower bracket.

The winner and runner-up in the playoff final on April 9 will earn berths in the Mid-Season Invitational along with other teams from LoL leagues worldwide. The LCS Spring Split carries a $200,000 prize pool, with the champion earning $100,000.

The playoffs begin March 24 with Cloud9 opposing Counter Logic Gaming and FlyQuest clashing with 100 Thieves in the upper-bracket semifinals. The losers will oppose Golden Guardians and Evil Geniuses the next day in the lower-bracket quarterfinals.
