FanDuel, New Jersey begin taking esports bets

Gamblers in New Jersey now can bet on competitive esports at casinos and racetracks, while FanDuel on Friday announced it is the first online sportsbook to take esports betting.

FanDuel customers in West Virginia, New Jersey, Indiana and Pennsylvania can place online wagers.

The first competition listed is the League of Legends World Championship final, to be held Sunday in Paris between G2Esports and Funplus Phoenix. The winning team will receive 37.5 percent of the prize pool, which will be at least $2.225 million. The runner-up will take home 13.5 percent of the pool.

FanDuel listed both teams at minus-110, which means a bet of $110 would return $100 in profit. The sportsbook also lists the same odds for which team will win each of the first two maps.

First action

The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City took the first esports wager in New Jersey on Thursday.

Esports and legalized sports betting are two growing markets.

“The total revenue for the global e-sports market was projected to eclipse the $1 billion mark in 2019, while the sports betting market just earlier this week was predicted to grow to $8 billion within the next five years,” according to a press release sent on behalf of FanDuel. “Both of these markets have changed the way people think of, and view, sports, and they are impressive in their own rights, but when you combine the two together that is when you get something truly special and that is what FanDuel has done today.”
