Asher Hong wins first men’s national title

Asher Hong recorded a two-day score of 170.930 to win his first national all-around gymnastics title on Saturday night in San Jose, Calif.

“It’s awesome,” Hong said. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work … just to get to this point of feeling consistent and comfortable with all of these routines. To see it pay off in the end is very relieving.”

Hong edged Stanford teammate Khoi Young, who posted a 169.455.

Fred Richard of the University of Michigan came in third at 169.311, while another Cardinal, Colt Walker, placed fourth with a score of 168.811. Yul Moldauer of 5280 Gymnastics had a 167.446 to round out the top five.

“You need to come swinging with your team,” Hong said of competing alongside his college teammates. “That’s why I love having 11 of my guys out here with me, competing with me, so it’s really easy to keep the energy up.”

Stanford gymnasts had a particularly strong showing on the vault, with Hong (30.560) and Young (30.404) placing first and second, respectively.

Hong finished second on the rings behind Donnell Whittenburg of Salto Gymnastics Center, who tallied a 30.272. Young came in second on the pommel, with EVO Gymnastics’ Stephen Nedoroscik taking that event with a 31.301.

Moldauer won the P bars, while Richard prevailed in the H bar.

Stanford gymnasts have now won the men’s U.S. title three years in a row.
