Bryce Hoppel defends 800m title

Bryce Hoppel defended his men’s 800-meter title on Sunday, winning the event on the final day of the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

After recording a 1:44.60 to win the 800m in 2022, Hoppel clocked a 1:46.20 on Sunday to edge Isaiah Harris (1:46.68) and Clayton Murphy (1:46.82). Hoppel is also a three-time winner of the indoor 800, claiming titles in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

Hoppel was in fourth place after the first 400 meters before storming back to take first.

Nia Akins had an impressive showing in the women’s 800m, prevailing in 1:59.50. She also won the indoor edition of the event this year, recording a 2:00.16 in Albuquerque, N.M., back in February.

“I just started writing down that I was going to be top three at USAs, and I just felt like over time, the more I wrote it down the more I believed it,” Akins told CITIUS MAG. “A lot of things worked out in my favor, too.”

Raevyn Rogers came in second with a time of 1:59.83, 0.69 ahead of Kaela Edwards.

Gabby Thomas dominated the field in the women’s 200m, setting the world lead and a personal best by finishing in 21.60 seconds. She beat Sha’Carri Richardson and Kayla White, whose times of 21.94 and 22.01, respectively, were both personal bests as well.

In the men’s 200m, Erriyon Knighton’s 19.72-second finish was enough to topple second-place finisher Kenny Bednarek (19.82) and Courtney Lindsey (19.85).

Abdihamid Nur won the men’s 5000m in 13:24.37, while Elise Cranny’s 14:52.66 allowed her to take the women’s 5000m title.
