Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman announced Thursday they have taken over the Australian SailGP team.
It is hardly Reynolds’ first foray into sports ownership, while Jackman joins him in the endeavor as an Australian icon and avid fan of the sport.
“We’re incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure,” a joint statement from Reynolds and Jackman read in part. “Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country, as well as being an avid fan of sailing. He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. Apologies in advance to Australia.”
Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney bought the Welsh soccer club Wrexham AFC in November 2020 and have helped the club earn promotion to the EFL Championship. Reynolds also invested in an Alpine Formula One team and a Colombian soccer club, La Equidad. He showed interest in purchasing a stake in the NHL’s Ottawa Senators before withdrawing his bid in 2023.
The sailing team will be renamed the BONDS Flying Roos, featuring a title partnership with Australian underwear company BONDS.
SailGP is a 12-team sailing league with other teams representing the United States, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. BONDS Flying Roos (39 points) owns first place in the standings by one point over Emirates GBR. The circuit’s next race is the New York Sail Grand Prix this Saturday and Sunday.
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins owns part of the United States SailGP team. Actress Anne Hathaway has a stake in the Italian team.
