Skier Lindsey Vonn coming out of retirement at 40

lindsey vonn

Lindsey Vonn launched her comeback with the U.S. Ski Team on Thursday at age 40, ending her retirement.

The three-time Olympic medalist and four-time World Cup season champion last competed on the slopes in 2019.

Vonn held the women’s record with 82 World Cup race wins before being eclipsed by Mikaela Shiffrin (97).

Her decorated career, highlighted by a downhill gold in the 2010 Vancouver Games, was plagued by injuries that included broken arms and legs, torn knee ligaments and concussions.

“Getting back to skiing without pain has been an incredible journey,” Vonn said.

Sophie Goldschmidt, the president CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard, said the team is “excited to have her back on snow and see where she can go from here.”

It’s not yet known which races Vonn plans to enter. The next Winter Olympics are taking place in Italy in 2026.
