Vermont became the 38th state to legalize sports betting, with a launch date set for January 2024.
Vermont governor Phil Scott signed the bill into law Wednesday — the same day that North Carolina passed legislation to become the 28th state to legalize online sports betting. North Carolina is targeting January to launch mobile and online betting platforms.
Vermont was the last remaining state in the northeast to authorize betting measures. Vermont is expecting $2 million in tax revenue in 2024 with a jump to at least $10 million by 2026.
North Carolina will offer up to 12 licenses, with a five-year license costing operators $5 million and gross gaming revenue tax set at 18 percent.
“This is an historic moment for the state of North Carolina and this will benefit our economy for generations to come,” Gov. Roy Cooper said.
