Daniel Jones continues to perform in preseason games, but Eli Manning will be the starter when the New York Giants open the season against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 8.
Coach Pat Shurmur reiterated the pecking order of his passers on Friday after Jones turned in another glowing game in the exhibition season.
“Eli’s our starter, and we’re getting Daniel ready to play,” Shurmur said. “(Jones) has done a good job in the preseason. He’s getting better and he’s going to do continue to do that, so that at whatever time we need him to play, he’ll be ready.”
Jones hit 9 of 11 attempts while playing four series against the Bengals on Thursday, bringing his preseason stat line to 25 of 30 for 369 yards and a touchdown. He fumbled once on a sack, but the Giants recovered.
The first-round pick has likely locked up the backup job behind Manning.
Prior to the latest comment from Shurmur, the coaching staff and general manager Dave Gettleman had been less forthcoming about the depth chart.
Teammates have spoken highly of Jones, selected sixth overall in the 2019 draft out of Duke, and his performance on and off the field this preseason.
