LAFC open as MLS Cup favorites

Los Angeles FC bowed out of the MLS playoffs in the semifinals last season, but that hasn’t deterred bettors’ confidence in the Supports’ Shield winners for 2020.

LAFC is the current favorite to win the MLS Cup at +350 at BetAmerica as the new season gets underway this weekend. That’s actually down from +250, with second favorite Atlanta United also sliding from +333 to +400.

PointsBet is offering the same odds on LAFC, while Atlanta United is +600.

LAFC set an MLS record with 72 points over the 34-game 2019 season. The team has also reached the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League after beating Liga MX’s Leon 3-0 on Thursday night on the strength of two goals from Carlos Vela.

The Seattle Sounders weren’t as fortunate, with a late goal by Honduras’ CD Olimpia knocking the reigning MLS Cup champions out in the Round of 16. However, after addressing several offseason needs and adding Joao Paulo, the Sounders have seen their title odds shorten from +700 to +600 at BetAmerica. They are also +700 at PointsBet.

“The Sounders are a similar team to the one that lifted last year’s MLS Cup and our players think they can become the first to go back-to-back since the LA Galaxy in 2012,” said BetAmerica’s Andrew Brown.

The longest odds at the book are on expansion team Nashville SC at +10000. Fellow new team Inter Miami has moved from +2000 to +2500.

PointsBet has the Colorado Rapids and Vancouver Whitecaps with the co-longest odds at +10000, with Inter Miami in the middle of the pack at +3300 and Nashville at +5000.

LAFC begin their season at home on Sunday against Inter Milan, just three days after their dramatic win over Leon.

“It’s our home opener,” said LAFC coach Bob Bradley. “We’re going to try like crazy to make sure that same football and the same mentality is there every night, regardless of the competition and regardless of who is on the field.”
