Days after the attorney for Kyren Lacy alleged that the former LSU wide receiver did not caused a fatal car crash on Dec. 17, Louisiana State Police put out video and data records on Tuesday that it maintains confirm Lacy’s driving sparked the chain of events leading to the collision.

Herman Hall, 78, died in the crash in Chackbay, La.

Lacy, 24, was driving a green Dodge Charger in the vicinity of the crash. Though his car didn’t collide with another car, he was cited in January with felony negligent homicide and hit and run driving and misdemeanor reckless driving, and he was awaiting a grand jury hearing when he died in April of what authorities ruled was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Lacy’s attorney, Matt Ory, told Homa, La., TV station HTV10 last week that Lacy’s car was far behind the collision, so Lacy wasn’t culpable in Hall’s death.

The state police said in the newly released video, “Since the incident occurred, the Louisiana State Police never reported that the green [Dodge] Charger impacted any of the involved vehicles. However, all evidence collected supports the conclusion that Lacy’s reckless operation of the green Charger in oncoming traffic triggered the chain of events involving the other drivers, ultimately resulting in the fatal crash.”

Ory acknowledged that Lacy illegally passed four cars shortly before the wreck, but added that Lacy was “72.6 yards behind the vehicles at the time of impact.”

The police video stated that cars had to move out of their natural paths due to Lacy’s driving: “As the green Dodge Charger returns to the southbound lane, aggressive braking and engine deceleration are immediately followed by a crash that can be heard on surveillance footage.”

In addition, an eyewitness is seen saying on police bodycam footage, “A green Charger caused all this.”

On April 12, two days ahead of his scheduled grand-jury appearance, Lacy led authorities on a pursuit before crashing in Spring, Texas. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, when deputies took Lacy from the car to put him in custody, they found discovered he had a gunshot wound. Lacy was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Lacy, from Thibodaux, La., made 58 receptions for 866 yards and tied for the Southeastern Conference lead with nine touchdown catches across 12 games in 2024.

He ended his collegiate career with 162 receptions for 2,360 yards and 26 TDs in 64 games with Louisiana (2020-21) and LSU (2022-24). Considered an NFL prospect, Lacy was not among the players invited to the NFL Scouting Combine when the list was revealed in mid-February, a month following his arrest.
