WTA roundup: Leylah Fernandez reaches Hong Kong quarters

No. 2 seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada cruised into the Hong Kong Tennis Open quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Germany’s Eva Lys on Wednesday.

Fernandez only faced one break point in the 68-minute match and advanced to face No. 7 Sorana Cirstea of Romania, who rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic.

Spain’s Cristina Bucsa knocked out No. 8 seed Emiliana Arango of Colombia 6-2, 6-4 and Australia’s Maya Joint also moved into the final eight with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Slovakia’s Viktoria Morvayova.

Jiangxi Open

Second-seeded Viktorija Golubic outlasted Russia’s Elena Pridankina 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 in two hours and 42 minutes to secure her spot in the quarterfinals in Jiujiang, China.

In a match with a combined 13 double faults, Golubic saved a whopping 24 of 29 break points and converted eight of 16 break chances. She next faces No. 5 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, a swift 6-2, 6-0 winner against Wushuang Zheng of China in 64 minutes.

Tamara Korpatsch rallied past fellow German Ella Seidel 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 and Austria’s Lilli Tagger earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Chennai Open

Top-seeded Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey opened with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova as action finally got underway after two days of rainouts in Chennai, India.

Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi held a 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 lead when No. 2 seed Francesca Jones of England retired. Katarzyna Kawa of Poland knocked out No. 5 Lucia Bronzetti of Italy.

No. 3 Donna Vekic of Croatia and No. 4 Janice Tjen of Indonesia advanced safely to the second round. Vekic defeated Indian hopeful Vaishnavi Adkar 6-1, 6-2 and Tjen outlasted Germany’s Caroline Werner 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2. No. 7 seed Kimberly Birrell of Australia overcame a slow start for a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Czech teen Nikola Bartunkova.
