LSU stays undefeated, holds off Boston College with OT win

Dedan Thomas Jr. scored 23 points, Marquel Sutton had a double-double and LSU stayed undefeated with a 78-69 overtime victory against host Boston College in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Wednesday night.

Sutton finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds and Mike Nwoko and Max Mackinnon added 12 points each for the Tigers (8-0).

Luka Toews scored 14 points before fouling out, Boden Kapke and Donald Hand Jr. had 12 each and Caleb Steger added 11 points to lead the Eagles (4-5).

Thomas made a layup and two free throws and Nwoko added a jumper to start the overtime scoring and LSU went on to outscore Boston College 17-8 in overtime.

Jayden Hastings scored four of the Eagles’ first five points of the second half and they trimmed LSU’s 11-point halftime lead to 39-31. The Tigers rebuilt the lead to 12 before Toews scored seven points during a 12-0 run that pulled Boston College even at 45.

Sutton answered with consecutive field goals, but Steger and Fred Payne each made a 3-pointer and Hastings added a field goal that gave the Eagles their first lead, 53-51, and Toews’ 3-pointer extended the lead to five.

LSU got within one point on two occasions before Hand made two free throws and Hastings added one for a four-point lead with 1:09 left. Thomas made two field goals to tie the score at 61 with 21 seconds left and Toews’s last-second 3-pointer was blocked.

Payne’s jumper pulled the Eagles even at 2 before Nwoko’s layup broke the tie and gave the Tigers the lead for good. Six LSU players scored and three of the baskets came on second chances as the Tigers opened a 16-7 lead.

Kapke made a 3-pointer and Steger made a 3-pointer and a free throw to pull Boston College within two points.

Sutton scored eight points and Thomas added seven during a 17-5 run that gave LSU its biggest lead of the half at 33-19. The Eagles crept within nine points before Robert Miller III’s dunk gave the Tigers a 37-26 halftime lead.
