Akira Schmid made 24 saves en route to his second shutout of the season as the Vegas Golden Knights earned a 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night in Newark, N.J.

It was the third career shutout for Schmid, who improved to 10-2-4, a career high for wins in a season. Schmid, a fifth-round draft pick by New Jersey in 2018 and who went 14-18-3 in three seasons with the Devils (2021-24), was facing his former club for the first time in his career.

Shea Theodore had a goal and assist, Jack Eichel notched two assists and Tomas Hertl and Ivan Barbashev also scored goals for Vegas, which won its third straight game. The Golden Knights, playing the opener of a five-game eastern road trip, improved to 10-2-3 all-time against the Devils, including 5-0-3 in New Jersey.

Jacob Markstrom finished with 22 saves for the Devils, who took their fourth straight loss.

Each team had a goal called back in the first 15 minutes.

The Devils appeared to take a 1-0 lead at the 8:45 mark when a Timo Meier spinning shot from near the left boards caromed into the net off teammate Nico Hischier stationed by the left post. However, the Golden Knights successfully challenged that Meier was offside entering the zone, and after a lengthy video review, the score was wiped off the board.

Six minutes later, Vegas’ Pavel Dorofeyev deflected a Theodore point shot into the net, but referee Gord Dwyer immediately ruled no goal due to a high stick, which replays quickly confirmed.

Theodore, left alone in the center of the right circle, made it 1-0 with 13 seconds left in the opening period. He faked a slap shot and then ripped a wrist shot past Markstrom’s blocker side and inside the far post.

Hertl increased the lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal with 4:24 remaining in the game, redirecting Mitch Marner’s point shot past Markstrom’s glove side for his team-leading 12th goal.

Barbashev sealed the outcome by adding another power-play goal with 1:24 to play.
