The Chicago Cubs are finalizing a multi-year contract with free agent right-hander Zac Gallen, multiple outlets reported.
ESPN gave a conflicting report on Saturday, however, saying that Gallen is “not close” to completing a deal.
Gallen, 30, finished 13-15 with a 4.83 ERA in 33 starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2025. He struck out 175 batters and walked 66 in 192 innings.
It was the fourth straight season with double-digit wins for Gallen, a 2023 All-Star with a career record of 66-52 and a 3.58 ERA in 176 starts for the Miami Marlins (2019) and Diamondbacks (2019-25).
Gallen finished in the top 10 in the National League Cy Young voting in 2020 (ninth), 2022 (fifth) and 2024 (third).
USA Today reported that the Cubs were working on a four-year deal with Gallen averaging $22 million per season.
