U.S. overhauls Ryder Cup qualifying to emphasize recent results

The United States is overhauling its qualification system for the 2027 Ryder Cup, eliminating the previous year’s results and moving away from a points structure tied to prize money.

The PGA of America announced Wednesday that the race for six automatic spots on captain Jim Furyk’s team will not begin until The American Express tournament in January 2027. Qualifying will span 31 events and conclude following the BMW Championship in August.

Under previous systems, performances in select tournaments during the year before a Ryder Cup, including the majors and Players Championship, contributed toward the points standings in addition to current-year performance.

That won’t be the case this time.

“I have worked diligently with our team and am pleased to implement a new qualifying process for the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup Team,” Furyk said. “We possess an exceptional mix of veterans and rising stars, and this system will help us identify the strongest players in September 2027.”

The revamped formula assigns fixed point values based on each tournament’s strength rather than on the amount of money earned, as in previous systems.

Major championship winners will receive 3,000 points, followed by 2,850 for the Players Championship. Winners of PGA Tour Signature events and the first two FedEx Cup playoff tournaments will earn 2,250, while champions at standard full-field Tour events receive 1,500.

U.S. players who make the cut and complete those tournaments will also receive points based on their finishing position. Opposite-field events won’t count.

The top six eligible Americans following the BMW Championship will qualify automatically. Furyk will fill the other six spots on the roster with captain’s selections during the week after the Tour Championship.

The Americans are trying to win on European soil for the first time since 1993 when they visit Adare Manor in Ireland next September.

Furyk said earlier this year that the dramatic changes in PGA Tour purses made prize money a less reliable way to compare performances across different events.

The 2027 Ryder Cup will be played Sept. 17-19.
