McIlroy: Players prefer postponing Ryder Cup

Rory McIlroy said most players want to postpone the Ryder Cup to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The world’s No. 1-ranked player told BBC Sports that rescheduling the biennial competition between teams from the U.S. and Europe is the “right call.” The 2020 Ryder Cup is currently scheduled for Sept. 25-27 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

“My personal hunch is that I don’t see how it is going to happen, so I do not think that it will happen,” McIlroy said.

He doesn’t support the idea of playing the popular event without spectators.

“I think the majority of players would like to see it pushed back until 2021 so that they can play in front of crowds and have the atmosphere that makes the Ryder Cup so special,” McIlroy said. “The players are the ones that make the Ryder Cup. If they are not on board with it and don’t want to play then there is no Ryder Cup.

“I see it being pushed back until 2021 and, honestly, I think that will be the right call.”

On hiatus since mid-March, the PGA Tour is scheduled to resume June 11-14 with the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
