ATLANTA — Philadelphia second baseman Luis Arraez will miss the National League wild-card series against the Atlanta Braves with a left ankle injury.
Arraez, who injured his ankle Thursday and has not played since, was replaced on the roster by infielder Otto Kemp.
“We still get improvement every day, but not enough to … he was going to try to hit today and wasn’t able to do it, so we kind of crossed that bridge today,” Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said Monday afternoon.
The best-of-three series begins Tuesday in Atlanta.
In Thursday’s 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, Arraez sprained his ankle attempting to avoid a tag at first base after an errant throw.
Missing the final three games of the regular season cost Arraez a chance to win his fourth batting title and extend his own record of winning batting titles with three different teams. He finished the season at .310, just behind Arizona’s Gabriel Moreno (.311).
In 151 games with the Giants and Phillies this season, Arraez also hit six home runs and drove in 34 runs. With five teams (Minnesota Twins, Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres, Giants, Phillies) over eight seasons, he is a .316 hitter with 42 homers and 372 RBIs in 991 games.
