Alex Wood leads pitching staff as Giants blank Padres

Left-hander Alex Wood and three relievers combined to shut out the Padres on Monday night as the visiting San Francisco Giants earned a 1-0 win in San Diego in the opener of a three-game series.

Wood (8-9) gave up three hits and no walks with five strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. He was followed by John Brebbia, Tyler Rogers and closer Camilo Doval, who worked a perfect ninth for his 15th save.

The Padres had the tying run taken off the board in the seventh inning on a successful challenge by Giants manager Gabe Kapler.

With the Giants leading 1-0, Brandon Drury hit a one-out single off Wood, who had retired nine of the previous 10 Padres he faced. Drury was the last hitter Wood faced.

Ha-Seong Kim greeted Brebbia with a double down the line in left. Drury tried to score from first on the play and was called safe on his head-first slide at the plate by home plate umpire Sean Barber. But Kapler challenged the call at the plate, and it paid off.

The replay showed the relay from left fielder Luis Gonzalez to shortstop Brandon Crawford to catcher Joey Bart reached home at the same time as Drury. But Drury’s hand was above the plate and not on it when Bart applied a swinging tag.

The Giants’ only run off starter Blake Snell (4-6) came in the fourth.

Evan Longoria, J.D. Davis and Crawford opened the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Thairo Estrada then drove in Longoria with a sacrifice fly. A walk to Bart reloaded the bases, but Snell struck out Gonzalez and retired Austin Slater on a sharp grounder to Drury at first.

The Giants also had runners at the corners with no one out in the first. But Snell struck out Mike Yastrzemski, Longoria and Davis.

Snell gave up the game’s only run on six hits. He surrendered two walks and tallied eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

The Padres have been shut out in back-to-back games and have lost five in a row, while the Giants have won three straight.
