Andrew McCutchen slugs two HRs as Brewers beat Dodgers

Andrew McCutchen homered twice and scored three runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-3 win against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday afternoon.

Hunter Renfroe had a two-run homer among his three hits for the Brewers, who earned a split of the four-game series.

Milwaukee starter Corbin Burnes (9-5) allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Devin Williams struck out the side in the ninth to earn his eighth save.

Gavin Lux had two hits and two RBIs and Trea Turner also had two hits for Los Angeles.

Dodgers starter Andrew Heaney (1-1) struck out 10 in 4 2/3 innings, but gave up five runs and five hits, including the three home runs, and walked one.

Heaney struck out the first two batters he faced and had a full count on McCutchen when he homered to center for a 1-0 lead.

McCutchen went deep again with two outs in the third.

Christian Yelich was on first with a one-out single when McCutchen drilled a 2-0 slider over the fence in center field for a 3-0 lead.

McCutchen is 3-for-6 in his career against Heaney with three home runs.

McCutchen should have struck out to end the fifth, but reached on a passed ball by catcher Will Smith. Renfroe then blasted a two-run homer to center for a 5-0 lead, ending the day for Heaney, who has yet to last five innings in four starts since coming off the injured list on July 27.

Those runs proved important as the Dodgers scored three off Burnes in the sixth.

Trea Turner led off with a double and took third on a single by Freddie Freeman. Smith then drove in Turner with a single to make it 5-1.

Burnes nearly escaped the inning without further damage, but Milwaukee center fielder Tyrone Taylor couldn’t hold on to Lux’s deep drive and two more runs scored on the triple to make it 5-3.

It was the seventh triple of the season for Lux, moving him into a tie for the major league lead with Amed Rosario of the Cleveland Guardians.
