Angels edge Astros on Kyren Paris’ first major league HR

Astros, Los Angeles Angels

Tyler Anderson gave up one run in eight innings, Kyren Paris hit his first career major league home run, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the host Houston Astros 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.

The Angels took two of three in the series, ending Houston’s streak of eight consecutive series victories against Los Angeles.

Anderson (5-4) yielded an RBI double to Mauricio Dubon in the fifth inning for Houston’s only run. In all, Anderson struck out four and walked two while making 95 pitches.

The Angels scored their two runs on Paris’ homer off Astros starter Hunter Brown (1-5) in the top of the fifth. Angels reliever Luis Garcia threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.

Anderson and Brown matched each other zero-for-zero the first four innings, though Anderson needed help from a replay review.

Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena hit what was initially ruled a home run to left field in the fourth inning. But the review showed the ball hit the top of the wall and caromed back onto the field, and Pena was credited with a double.

Anderson responded with a strikeout of Jon Singleton to end the inning and keep the game at 0-0. Both teams, however, scored in the fifth.

Mickey Moniak walked with one out in the top of the fifth, bringing up Paris, who got ahold of a 91 mph sinker on a full-count pitch and hit it over the wall in left-center for a two-run homer and 2-0 Angels lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jake Meyers led off with a walk and scored from first on a double by Dubon, cutting the Angels’ lead to 2-1. Dubon, though, was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

Anderson escaped further damage in the inning, but the Angels lost shortstop Zach Neto to an elbow injury. Neto hurt the elbow throwing out Victor Caratini at first base after fielding a grounder, forcing him to leave the game.

The Astros threatened against Anderson again in the seventh, putting runners on first and third with two out. But Anderson retired Caratini on a fielder’s choice to hold the 2-1 lead.
