Angels overpower Dodgers to gain series split

Angels, Dodgers

Griffin Canning allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings and was backed by three home runs in the Los Angeles Angels’ 10-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif.

The teams split two games this week and split their four-game season series.

Mickey Moniak’s three-run homer highlighted a five-run first inning for the Angels, who also got long balls from Taylor Ward and Niko Kavadas. Ward went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs while extending his hitting streak to 14 games.

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani failed to reach base in the game, going 0-for-4 with one strikeout. The Dodgers had six hits in all, including two from Gavin Lux.

Dodgers starter Bobby Miller (2-4) struck out three batters in a row in the first inning, but not before the Angels pushed across five runs. Ward led off with a walk, Zach Neto was hit by a pitch and Nolan Schanuel singled to load the bases with no outs.

Anthony Rendon followed with a two-run single, and Moniak hit the first pitch he saw from Miller into the right field seats for a 5-0 Angels lead.

Kavadas homered to lead off the second inning, and Ward went deep to lead off the fifth, pushing the Angels’ advantage to 7-0.

Canning, meanwhile, cruised through the early innings. He retired Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman in order in the first inning, and he struck out three in the second.

Canning (5-12) gave up a leadoff walk to Miguel Rojas in the third but got a double-play ball from Austin Barnes and retired Ohtani on a fly ball. Betts led off the fourth with a single but was erased when Freeman hit into a double play.

Canning got through six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits before the Dodgers broke through against him in the seventh with a run on a two-out RBI single by Andy Pages.

Hunter Strickland relieved Canning and got the final out of the inning to preserve the Angels’ lead at 7-1. Canning gave up four hits and four walks while striking out seven and making 98 pitches.

The Angels added three more runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Jo Adell, Ward and Neto.
