Angels win 6th straight, walk off vs. Tigers in 10th

Tigers, Angels

Kevin Pillar hit an RBI single with one out in the 10th inning to lift the Los Angeles Angels to their sixth consecutive win, 6-5, over the Detroit Tigers Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif.

Taylor Ward began the inning as the automatic runner on second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Guillorme. Pillar followed with his game-winning single off Jason Foley (2-2).

The Angels trailed 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh but got a two-run double by Ward before Logan O’Hoppe’s homer leading off the eighth tied the game.

Ben Joyce (1-0), one of four Los Angeles relievers to toss a scoreless inning, pitched the 10th to earn the victory.

The Tigers opened the game by loading the bases on a single, an error and an infield single against Angels starter Griffin Canning. But Canning was able to avoid major damage, allowing only one run on Colt Keith’s RBI fielder’s choice.

The Angels bounced back with two runs in the third against Tigers starter Reese Olson.

Nolan Schanuel walked, Luis Rengifo singled and stole second and Ward walked to load the bases with no outs.

After Miguel Sano struck out, a wild pitch by Olson allowed Schanuel to score from third. Rengifo then scored from third on Willie Calhoun’s groundout, putting the Angels up 2-1.

The Tigers regained the lead in the fourth, getting three singles against Canning. The runs scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Zach McKinstry and a sacrifice fly by Jake Rogers for a 3-2 lead.

Rogers’ two-run homer in the sixth, his sixth of 2024, increased Detroit’s lead to 5-2.
Canning allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks, striking out four while throwing 102 pitches in six innings.

Olson also exited after six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks, striking out nine in a 98-pitch outing.

The Angels immediately took advantage of Olson’s absence in the seventh, getting a two-run double by Ward off Tigers reliever Beau Brieske to cut their deficit to 5-4.

In the eighth, O’Hoppe hit the first pitch from Will Vest over the left-center-field fence for his 12th homer, tying the game at 5.
