Anthony Volpe belted a three-run home run and Aaron Judge also went deep to lift the visiting New York Yankees to a 9-4 victory over the Miami Marlins on Friday.
New York’s Kyle Higashioka ripped a two-run single in the ninth inning to highlight a three-hit performance. Oswaldo Cabrera, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Gleyber Torres each had an RBI single for the Yankees, who recorded 14 hits and went 7-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
Randy Vasquez (2-1), who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to the game, picked up the win after allowing two runs on three hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Miami’s Josh Bell homered to lead off the sixth inning and Jake Burger had a pair of RBI doubles. Jesus Sanchez had a run-scoring triple for the Marlins, who have lost eight of their last 11 games.
Former Marlin Giancarlo Stanton and Harrison Bader each had a single to lead off the second inning before Volpe deposited a 2-2 fastball from Jesus Luzardo (8-7) over the wall in left-center field. Volpe’s homer, his 15th of the season, gave the Yankees an early 3-0 lead.
The Marlins scored twice off Yankees opener Ian Hamilton in the bottom of the second before Judge led off the third by sending a 3-1 fastball from Luzardo over the wall in center field. Judge’s 464-foot shot was his team-leading 22nd homer of the season and second in three games.
New York kept its foot on the gas in the fourth inning, with Cabrera and Kiner-Falefa each delivering an RBI single to chase Luzardo from the game. Torres extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single off George Soriano to extend the Yankees’ lead to 7-2.
The Marlins chipped away as Burger ripped his second RBI double of the game in the fourth inning and Bell crushed a 2-0 changeup from Vasquez to lead off the sixth. Bell’s homer was his 15th of the season and third in his last two games.
Luzardo permitted seven runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings to lose his second straight start.
