The Houston Astros selected the contract of utility player David Hensley from Triple-A Sugar Land on Saturday and optioned first baseman JJ Matijevic.
To make room for Hensley on the 40-man roster, left-hander Jonathan Bermudez was designated for assignment.
Hensley was batting .298 with 10 homers, 30 doubles, 57 RBIs and 20 steals in 104 games at Sugar Land. He has played defensively at first, second and third base, shortstop and left field for the Space Cowboys.
The 26-year-old was drafted in the 26th round in 2018 and has yet to make his major league debut.
The Astros are short-handed in the infield with Aledmys Diaz on the 10-day injured list and Mauricio Dubon day-to-day with a left elbow contusion.
Houston outfielder Yordan Alvarez was taken to a hospital during Friday night’s game at Atlanta due to shortness of breath exacerbated by the Braves’ in-game fireworks.
Matijevic, 26, was batting .200 with two home runs and four RBIs in 27 games with the Astros this season. He made his major league debut April 22. Bermudez, 26, was 2-4 with an 8.96 ERA in 19 appearances (14 starts) at Sugar Land.
