Astros RHP Justin Verlander (neck) set for rehab outing

Justin Verlander

Houston Astros right-hander Justin Verlander was sent on a rehab assignment and will make a start for Triple-A Sugar Land on Saturday.

On the injured list with a neck strain, it will be Verlander’s first game action since June 9, when he gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings in a no-decision against the Los Angeles Angels.

Verlander is 3-2 with a 3.95 ERA in 10 starts this season. He did not make his first start this year until April 19 because of shoulder inflammation.

The 41-year-old has collected three American League Cy Young Awards and one AL MVP (2011) over his 19-year career. Verlander is 260-143 with a 3.25 in 519 career starts and helped the Astros to World Series titles in 2017 and 2022.

According to reports, Verlander could rejoin the major league roster as soon as an Aug. 22-25 four-game road series against the Baltimore Orioles.
