Benches empty late as Padres avoid sweep vs. Dodgers

Xander Bogaerts had a second-inning home run among his four hits and the visiting San Diego Padres earned a 5-3 victory Thursday over the Los Angeles Dodgers to avoid a four-game sweep in a series where tempers reached a boiling point.

Rookie right-hander Ryan Bergert opened with 4 2/3 scoreless innings as the Padres won for just the second time in seven games over a span of 11 days against the Dodgers. Jake Cronenworth had three hits, including an RBI double for San Diego.

Both benches emptied in the ninth inning behind home plate after Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch from Dodgers right-hander Jack Little in his major league debut. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and Padres manager Mike Shildt were ejected.

In the ninth, Shohei Ohtani was then hit by a pitch from Robert Suarez, who was ejected. Tatis and Ohtani each were hit by pitches twice in the series. The Dodgers’ Andy Pages also was hit twice.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-6) gave up three runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings as the Dodgers saw their five-game winning streak come to an end. Los Angeles won seven times over the past 10 games, all against the Padres and San Francisco Giants, their National League West rivals.

Bogaerts’ fourth homer of the season went to left-center field for a 1-0 lead in the second. It was his first home run in 31 games stretching back to May 14.

San Diego made it 2-0 in the fifth when Bogaerts singled, went to third on a Cronenworth single and scored on a Jose Iglesias sacrifice fly.

The Dodgers’ high-powered offense had just two hits through four innings but had runners on the corners in the fifth with two outs. Left-hander Adrian Morejon replaced Bergert and retired Ohtani on a comebacker to end the inning. Morejon (4-3) retired all four batters he faced.

Cronenworth had an RBI double in the seventh and in the eighth Gavin Sheets had an RBI single and Iglesias had a bases-loaded walk.

The Dodgers ended the shutout bid with three runs in the ninth and had the tying run on base when Dalton Rushing struck out against left-hander Yuki Matsui, who earned his first save.
