Brady Singer, Royals salvage series finale vs. Rockies

Royals, Rockies

Brady Singer threw seven dominant innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 10-1 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday in Denver.

Singer (5-5) allowed one run on six hits while striking out seven and walking a pair, earning his first victory since May 19. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Royals.

Bobby Witt Jr. finished 3-for-5, including a three-run home run, while Maikel Garcia tallied a pair of hits and a three-run homer of his own.

Tanner Gordon (0-1) started for Colorado, making his MLB debut. The 26-year-old right-hander threw 6 1/3 innings of five-run, eight-hit ball while striking out four.

Jake Cave was 2-for-3 for the Rockies, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

After a scoreless first inning, Salvador Perez and Michael Massey led off the top of the second with singles for Kansas City. Freddy Fermin then laced a ground ball up the middle, scoring the game’s first run.

After Gordon retired MJ Melendez, Garcia launched his sixth homer of the year, a 382-foot shot, giving the Royals a 4-0 lead.

The Rockies threatened in the bottom of the third as Michael Toglia walked, then advanced to second on Nolan Jones’ sacrifice bunt. Aaron Schunk then laced the first hit of his career, placing runners at the corners for Colorado. Singer, however, struck out Charlie Blackmon and Ezequiel Tovar to escape the jam.

In the top of the seventh, Melendez connected on a one-out solo homer, his ninth of the year, giving Kansas City a 5-0 lead. Garcia then reached on a bunt single, chasing Gordon after 78 pitches.

Colorado cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh, as Cave and Toglia reached on singles before Jones’ RBI base hit.

With Justin Lawrence pitching for the Rockies in the top of the eighth, Witt and Vinnie Pasquantino singled to start the inning. Two batters later, Massey drove in Witt with an RBI single, giving the Royals a 6-1 lead. After a wild pitch, Fermin’s sac fly scored the seventh Kansas City run.

Angel Zerpa came in to relieve Singer in the bottom of the eighth after 86 pitches. Zerpa threw a scoreless inning.

The Royals tacked on three more in the ninth, as Witt connected on his 15th homer of the season, a three-run shot off Ty Blach.
