Brandon Woodruff threw six dominant innings in his return from injury and Joey Ortiz hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly on Monday to help the visiting Milwaukee Brewers earn a 2-1 victory in 10 innings over the Cincinnati Reds.

In his first start since April 30 due to right shoulder inflammation, Woodruff retired the first 16 Reds he faced before allowing a one-out single in the sixth. The veteran right-hander struck out 10 — tied for his most in a game since striking out 11 on Aug. 25, 2023.

Cincinnati’s Tony Santillan (1-4) worked the 10th. After Garrett Mitchell walked to place runners on first and second, Sal Frelick laid down a sacrifice bunt and Ortiz’s sac fly plated the game’s first run. Santillan’s wild pitch then made it 2-0.

Joel Kuhnel allowed Sal Stewart’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning. After Dane Myers reached on an infield single, Kuhnel got Spencer Steer to ground out, securing his fifth save of the season.

Brady Singer threw seven scoreless innings for the Reds, allowing just two hits while striking out seven and walking a pair. Cincinnati mustered just two hits and struck out 14 times.

Milwaukee drew back-to-back walks to open the second, but Singer struck out Mitchell and retired Frelick and Ortiz on consecutive groundouts to end the threat.

Tyler Stephenson laced a one-out single off Woodruff in the bottom of the sixth for the Reds’ first hit. Woodruff then struck out Matt McLain and got Blake Dunn to fly out to preserve the scoreless tie.

Mitchell’s two-out single in the seventh accounted for Milwaukee’s second hit, but Frelick’s inning-ending lineout kept the Brewers off the board.

Aaron Ashby relieved Woodruff in the bottom of the seventh and struck out a pair during a perfect frame.

Sam Moll tossed a clean eighth in relief of Singer before Milwaukee’s Abner Uribe threw a perfect bottom of the inning.

Cincinnati’s Tejay Antone and Brock Burke combined to record a scoreless top of the ninth before Trevor Megill’s (2-2) perfect ninth sent the game to extra innings.
