Braves stop Nationals’ no-hit bid, then rally to victory

braves

Marcell Ozuna capped a three-run eighth inning with a two-run homer and the visiting Atlanta Braves rallied to beat the Washington Nationals 5-2 on Thursday night.

Adam Duvall also homered for the Braves, who have won three of four.

Ozzie Albies doubled against Hunter Harvey (2-2) with two outs in the eighth inning and Austin Riley blooped a single to center, scoring Albies to give Atlanta a 3-2 lead. Ozuna followed with his 18th home run of the season, a shot to left-center, to make it 5-2.

Aaron Bummer (2-2) pitched one inning for the win and Raisel Iglesias worked the ninth for his 16th save.

CJ Abrams and Lane Thomas hit back-to-back homers for the Nationals, who have lost four straight. Abrams had gone 1-for-21 over his past five games.

Washington starter Mitchell Parker took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The rookie went seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

Atlanta did not have a baserunner until Duvall was hit by a pitch in the fifth. The first Braves hit was Orlando Arcia’s ground-rule double leading off the sixth. One out later, center fielder Jacob Young robbed Ozzie Albies with a sliding catch in right center to save a run.

Abrams led off the bottom half against Reynaldo Lopez with a home run to right-center, his 10th of the season, and Thomas followed with a shot into the visitors’ bullpen in left-center to make it 2-0.

Lopez had not allowed a home run in 34 1/3 innings.

Jesse Winker and Luis Garcia Jr. followed with singles, but Keibert Ruiz lined out and Lopez got Joey Meneses to ground into a double play.

Lopez allowed two runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Atlanta tied it in the seventh. Ozuna led off with a single and, with one out, Duvall homered to left-center on a first-pitch fastball to make it 2-2.
