Brenton Doyle scores on error as Rockies rally past D-backs

Rockies, Diamondbacks

Brenton Doyle scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Colorado Rockies rallied to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in Denver on Monday night.

The loss cut Arizona’s lead in the National League wild-card race to a game over the New York Mets and two over Atlanta.

Doyle finished with two hits and two stolen bases and Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman went deep for Colorado (58-93), which beat the Diamondbacks (83-67) for just the third time in 11 tries this season. Seth Halvorsen (2-0) pitched two innings of relief for the win.

The game was tied entering the ninth when Doyle led off with a single and then stole second. Ryan Thompson (7-5) intentionally walked Ryan McMahon and got Brendan Rodgers to hit a potential double-play ball to second baseman Ketel Marte.

Marte flipped the ball to shortstop Geraldo Perdomo for the out at second but Perdomo’s relay to first was wild and Doyle trotted home with the winning run.

Marte homered and Gabriel Moreno had two hits for Arizona.

Rockies righty Antonio Senzatela allowed two runs on four hits in three-plus innings in his first major league start since May 10, 2023. He had Tommy John surgery later that summer and made five rehab starts this year before making his season debut Monday night.

Senzatela had a shaky beginning to his first start in 16 months. Corbin Carroll led off the game with a triple to center and Marte followed with his 32nd home run, a shot to center, to put the Diamondbacks ahead 2-0.

It stayed that way until Tovar led off the bottom of the fourth with his team-leading 24th homer of the season.

Arizona starter Merrill Kelly didn’t give up another hit through six innings and worked around two walks in the fifth to keep Arizona in front. He gave up the one run on two hits and struck out five but was denied the win when Goodman hit his 12th home run of the season, a solo shot to left, off reliever Kevin Ginkel.
