Sal Frelick scored the go-ahead run on an eighth-inning error as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 2-1 win and a series sweep over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

Milwaukee took the lead in the eighth when Jackson Chourio’s two-out grounder was misplayed for an error by St. Louis shortstop Masyn Winn, allowing Frelick to score from third base.

St. Louis starter Dustin May (3-6) gave up two hits, two runs (one earned) and set a new season high with nine strikeouts. The right-hander held the Brewers hitless through seven innings.

Garrett Mitchell broke up May’s no-hit bid with a ringing double to left field to lead off the eighth and Luis Rengifo’s bunt single gave the Brewers runners on first and third.

JoJo Romero relieved May and allowed Frelick to reach base on a fielder’s choice. After Romer struck out Andrew Vaughn, he gave up Christian Yelich’s RBI single to tie the game 1-1. Chourio followed with the grounder to shortstop.

Aaron Ashby (9-0) yielded one hit, one walk and struck out two to earn the win in relief. Trevor Megill notched his sixth save with a scoreless ninth. Jordan Walker had two hits for the Cardinals, who lost their fourth straight game.

Winn’s one-out single in the ninth was followed by a stolen base. Bryan Torres flied out to the warning track and Winn advanced to third. But Megill struck out pinch hitter Yohel Pozo to end the game.

Earlier in the game, Walker’s second hit, a blooper into shallow right field, opened the fourth. After Chad Patrick picked up consecutive strikeouts, Torres rifled an RBI triple that rattled around the right field corner and the Cardinals led 1-0.

Winn’s diving stab at shortstop on Frelick’s hot-shot grounder, along with Alec Burleson’s scoop at first, ended the fifth and kept Milwaukee hitless.

Milwaukee’s defense returned the favor when it punctuated the sixth with David Hamilton handling Winn’s smash to shortstop and Jake Bauers’ pick at first.

Brewers starter Patrick allowed one run on five hits, walked one and struck out four over four innings.
