Bryce Miller, Mariners shut down Mets 6-0

Mets, Mariners

Bryce Miller pitched six scoreless innings as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting New York Mets 6-0 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

Ryan Bliss, recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday, hit a two-run homer as the Mariners remained tied with Houston atop the American League West.

The Mets had won three of four but remained a half-game ahead of Atlanta in the race for the National League’s third and final wild-card berth.
Miller (9-7), a right-hander, allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out six.

The only hits Miller gave up were two-out doubles by Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo in the second and third innings, respectively, and a two-out single by Jeff McNeil in the fourth.

The Mets threatened against reliever Collin Snider in the seventh as J.D. Martinez led off with a walk and McNeil lined a single to right. But Snider got Vientos to ground into a double play and retired Francisco Alvarez on a flyout to right.

Seattle’s Austin Voth pitched the eighth and Trent Thornton worked the ninth to complete the shutout.

Mets lefty Jose Quintana (6-8) allowed five runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings, with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Seattle opened the scoring in the second as Mitch Haniger lined a one-out single to left field and Bliss deposited the next pitch into the Mariners’ bullpen in left-center for his first homer at T-Mobile Park.

Quintana retired the next 11 batters he faced before walking Mitch Garver leading off the bottom of the seventh. Dylan Moore reached on an infield single and both runners advanced as Bliss grounded out to Quintana. With two outs, No. 9 hitter Leo Rivas grounded a two-run single into right field to double Seattle’s lead to 4-0 and end Quintana’s night.

Adam Ottavino replaced Quintana and walked the first two batters he faced to load the bases for Cal Raleigh, who lined a two-run single to right to make it 6-0.
