Chase Burns pitched five scoreless innings to win his 11th straight decision as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the host Seattle Mariners 4-2 Tuesday night.
Elly De La Cruz, Eugenio Suarez and Nathaniel Lowe homered for the Reds, who snapped Seattle’s three-game winning streak and knocked the Mariners out of first place in the American League West. Weston Wilson and Julio Rodriguez went deep for the hosts.
Burns (12-1), in his first full season, allowed three hits — singles by Josh Naylor and Victor Robles in the second and another single by Naylor in the fourth. The right-hander walked two and struck out six while throwing 91 pitches.
Reds closer Emilio Pagan worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save of the season.
De La Cruz led off the game with an eight-pitch at-bat against Luis Castillo (3-9), eventually going deep to right-center off the veteran right-hander.
Suarez, a two-time former Mariner, led off the fourth by hitting a first-pitch fastball 405 feet over the fence in center, giving the Reds a 2-0 lead.
Cincinnati scored again in the fifth. TJ Friedl drew a leadoff walk and Edwin Arroyo, acquired in the 2022 trade that sent Castillo to Seattle, grounded a single to right. De La Cruz grounded out to first to advance the runners and Sal Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0.
Wilson thwarted the shutout bid with a one-out shot off the out-of-town scoreboard in left field in the seventh off Tejay Antone. The Mariners loaded the bases later in the inning with a trio of walks before Brock Burke got Naylor to ground out to first to get out of the jam.
Rodriguez, who didn’t start after being hit in the left hamstring by a thrown ball the previous night, hit a 409-foot drive to left-center leading off the bottom of the eighth against Julian Garcia.
Lowe opened the ninth with an opposite-field shot off Michael Rucker for the final margin.
The Mariners were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10.
Castillo made a quality start, giving up three runs on four hits over seven innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
