Diamondbacks stay hot, beat Phillies in NLCS rematch

diamondbacks

Gabriel Moreno belted a two-run homer and Joc Pederson and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also went deep to fuel the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday.

Each of the three had two hits and Geraldo Perdomo added an RBI single to send the Diamondbacks to their eighth win in the last 11 games. Arizona (38-38) reached the .500 mark for the first time since it was 9-9 on April 16.

Jordan Montgomery (6-4) allowed two runs on five hits in six innings to record his third straight win.

Nick Castellanos’ solo homer in the eighth inning cut the Diamondbacks’ lead to 5-4 before Paul Sewald retired the side in order in the ninth to secure his ninth save of the season.

The teams were meeting for the first time since Arizona rallied from a 3-2 series deficit to defeat Philadelphia in the 2023 National League Championship Series.

Trea Turner launched a two-run homer and added an RBI single for the Phillies, who have lost six of their last nine games.

Gurriel deposited a 2-2 split-finger fastball from Taijuan Walker (3-3) over the wall in left field to open the scoring in the second inning. Gurriel’s homer was his 10th of the season and first since June 7.

Corbin Carroll worked a one-out walk in the third inning before Moreno sent a 3-1 sinker from Walker over the wall in center field. Moreno’s third homer of the season gave the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead; however, Moreno later exited with a sprained left thumb.

Pederson wasted little time adding to that advantage after blasting a 1-1 curveball from Walker over the wall in center field two pitches after Moreno’s homer. Pederson’s homer was his 10th of the season and third in his last seven games.

Walker fell to 0-3 in his last five starts after permitting four runs on five hits with three walks in four innings.

Philadelphia halved the deficit in the third inning after Turner sent a 1-0 sinker from Montgomery over the wall in left-center field.

Turner’s infield single plated David Dahl in the seventh. But Bryce Harper grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
