DJ LeMahieu’s grand slam powers Yankees’ sweep of Phillies

yankees phillies

DJ LeMahieu hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs to help the visiting New York Yankees complete a three-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies with a 6-5 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Giancarlo Stanton had two hits and scored a run for New York, which has won five in a row overall.

Yankees starter Nestor Cortes (5-9) allowed three runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two for his first win in his past seven starts.

Clay Holmes pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.

Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez (7-7) dropped his third straight start after allowing six runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Weston Wilson homered, Alec Bohm doubled, tripled and scored twice, and Nick Castellanos had two hits and three RBIs for Philadelphia, which has lost 11 of its past 15.

Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr. began the second inning with singles before Alex Verdugo walked with one out to load the bases. LeMahieu stepped up and hit a high fly toward the left-center field wall that went off a fan and fell onto the field. Video review determined the ball would have carried over the fence, resulting in the third grand slam of LeMahieu’s major-league career and a 4-0 lead.

It was the first home run Sanchez has allowed at home in 73 1/3 innings this season.

Cortes retired the first nine batters before Kyle Schwarber walked to lead off the fourth. Austin Hays then doubled over the head of Verdugo in left to put runners on second and third. Following a strike out, Bohm drove in the Phils’ first run with a groundout and Castellanos came through with a two-out RBI single to left to make it 4-2.

Wilson homered over the left-field fence to lead off the fifth and further trim the lead to 4-3.

The Yankees rallied with two outs in the sixth. Anthony Volpe and Verdugo reached on singles, ending the day for Sanchez. Jose Ruiz came in and surrendered a two-run double to LeMahieu into the right-center field gap for a 6-3 lead.

Bohm tripled in the sixth and scored on a groundout by Castellanos to make it 6-4.

Bohm doubled with one out in the eighth and came home on a single by Castellanos to cut it to 6-5, but Philadelphia eventually left the bases loaded.
