Dodgers look for fresh start after Cubs’ dominant victory

Tyler Glasnow

The Los Angeles Dodgers look forward to turning the page when they host the Chicago Cubs in the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday.

The Dodgers lost 16-0 on Saturday night, their largest shutout defeat in 50 years.

The Dodgers trailed 2-0 heading to the seventh on Saturday but surrendered 14 runs over the final three innings to cement their first loss at home this season.

“For me, right now, it’s just the mindset of trying to forget this one and win the series,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I feel really good about (Sunday) and (Tyler) Glasnow taking the mound and having a fully stocked pen.”

Glasnow (1-0, 6.43 ERA) had a rough time with the weather conditions in his most recent outing last Sunday at the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-hander lasted just two innings, allowing five runs on two hits and five walks in the 8-7 loss.

“Once I had a couple poorly gripped balls, I lost my aggression and rhythm within the mound,” Glasnow said. “I couldn’t be aggressive, I couldn’t use everything I wanted to. I think it was just a rough day. Just try to go out the rest of the week and figure it out.”

Glasnow has made four appearances against the Cubs in his career, including two starts, and is 0-1 with a 10.61 ERA.

The Cubs roughed up Dodgers reliever Ben Casparius for six runs and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings on Saturday night. He had not allowed a run in his previous six relief appearances this season covering nine innings.

“I’m not going to put too much credence into one rough outing,” Roberts said.

Right-hander Colin Rea (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to make his first start of the season for the Cubs on Sunday.

Rea, who made 27 starts last season, has made three appearances out of the bullpen this season and has not allowed a run in 5 1/3 innings.

Rea has made seven appearances against the Dodgers in his career, including four starts, and is 1-1 with a 6.37 ERA.

Cubs designated hitter Seiya Suzuki is day to day after aggravating a wrist injury on Saturday while hitting a line-drive out in the third inning. He originally injured the wrist on Monday while sliding into second base against the Texas Rangers.

“I thought we were making progress, and he got jammed a little bit on that line-drive out,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. “Just kind of reaggravated it, so we’re day to day at this point.”

Chicago will continue looking for first baseman Michael Busch to do damage.

He went 4-for-6 on Saturday with a home run, two doubles and four runs scored.

“I had a couple fastballs early in the at-bat that I thought I just missed, and then I got one and it felt pretty good,” Busch said of his second-inning home run on Saturday. “Just to get off to a good start like that was good. I thought we had good at-bats all night top to bottom.”

The former Dodgers first-round draft pick in 2019 is 9-for-22 in five career road games at Dodger Stadium with two home runs, four doubles and seven RBIs.
