Dodgers push across 4 runs in eighth to double-up Pirates

Teoscar Hernandez

Teoscar Hernandez and Enrique Hernandez each homered in a four-run eighth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled away for a 8-4 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday to end a three-game losing streak.

Teoscar Hernandez snapped a 4-4 tie with a home run to left field off reliever Colin Holderman for his seventh of the season. Enrique Hernandez hit a three-run pinch-hit homer off Joey Wentz three batters later, his fifth.

After a 1-for-16 stretch, Los Angeles designated hitter Shohei Ohtani had three extra-base hits with two runs scored. Kirby Yates (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the Dodgers.

Oneil Cruz hit a leadoff home run and drove in two runs for the Pirates, while Ke’Bryan Hayes and Tommy Pham each had two hits. Holderman (0-1) gave up three runs on two hits and a walk without recording an out.

Cruz hit a Roki Sasaki’s game-opening fastball just over the center field wall to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. It was Cruz’s fourth leadoff home run this season, with two coming on the current road trip.

The Dodgers moved in front 2-1 in their half of the first when Ohtani doubled and scored on a double from Teoscar Hernandez. A throwing error by Pirates second baseman Adam Frazier allowed the second run to score.

Cruz got to Sasaki again in the fifth inning when he gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead on a two-run single to right.

Ohtani tripled in the bottom of the fifth and scored on a two-out single from Freddie Freeman to tie the score 3-3.

Sasaki’s night ended after he hit Hayes with a pitch in the sixth. He gave up three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings with two walks and four strikeouts on a season-high 93 pitches.

The Pirates took a 4-3 lead in the seventh on a groundball from Bryan Reynolds, with the Dodgers answering yet again a half inning later on an Ohtani double to left center to score Andy Pages.

Pirates starter Mitch Keller gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings with one walk and six strikeouts.
