Dodgers RHP Dustin May to have season-ending elbow surgery

Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed starting pitcher Dustin May will undergo surgery on his throwing elbow and miss the rest of the season, the team announced on Tuesday.

May, who had Tommy John surgery in his right elbow in May 2021, needs a different surgery to repair the flexor tendon in the same elbow, per the Dodgers. Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the surgery on July 18 in Los Angeles.

May, 25, has shown flashes of potential across his first five seasons in the major leagues, all with the Dodgers, but injuries have limited him to 46 career games (34 starts) and never more than 10 starts in a single season.

He was part of a pitching staff that helped the Dodgers win the World Series in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. May went 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA over 12 games (10 starts) that year and finished fifth in voting for National League Rookie of the Year.

The following spring, he tore his UCL while pitching and soon underwent Tommy John surgery, sidelining him until August 2022.

May went 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA over nine starts this year. His last appearance came on May 17, when he left a start against the Minnesota Twins after one inning due to elbow pain. He was eventually placed on the 60-day injured list with what was described at the time as a flexor pronator strain.

May has a 12-9 record and a 3.10 ERA for his career, with 174 strikeouts and 57 walks across 191 2/3 innings. The Dodgers selected him in the third round of the 2016 draft.
