Zach Neto scored on Taylor Ward’s double-play grounder in the 10th inning to help the visiting Los Angeles Angels defeat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 Tuesday night.
Thanks to an error and a walk, the Angels had the bases loaded with no outs when Ward’s ground ball to third pushed across the decisive run.
Reid Detmers held the Red Sox scoreless in the bottom of the 10th to collect his first career save. He struck out two of three batters he faced.
Former Boston closer Kenley Jansen (1-2) tossed a scoreless ninth inning, escaping a first-and-third jam. The Red Sox went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. They stranded 11 runners en route to their 17th loss in 23 one-run games this season.
Boston reliever Zack Kelly (1-2) was charged with an unearned run in the 10th.
The Red Sox received a two-run homer from Ceddanne Rafaela, his fifth long ball of the season. Rafaela had three hits in the loss, and teammate Jarren Duran collected two hits and an RBI.
Travis d’Arnaud produced three hits for the Angels, who received two hits, two runs and an RBI from Neto.
The Angels have won the first two games of the three-game series.
Boston starter Brayan Bello gave up three runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked two. It was an encouraging performance from Bello, who failed to make it out of the fifth in each of his previous five outings.
Yusei Kikuchi pitched the first five-plus innings for Los Angeles. He surrendered three runs on eight hits, walked five and struck out five.
The Angels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third. Neto’s single drove in Jo Adell with the game’s first run. Nolan Schanuel followed with a two-run single.
Boston got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Connor Wong singled, moved to third on Kristian Campbell’s double and made it 3-1 when he scored on Duran’s double.
Rafaela’s home run came with Trevor Story on first and tied the game 3-3 in the sixth.
