Drew Thorpe earns first career win, White Sox down Tigers

Drew Thorpe

Drew Thorpe pitched six scoreless innings and notched his first career win as the Chicago White Sox topped the host Detroit Tigers, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Thorpe (1-1) gave up two hits and walked four while striking out five. Thorpe, who was making his third career start, gave up eight runs in 3 1/3 innings to Arizona in his previous outing on Sunday.

Korey Lee hit a solo home run as the White Sox snapped a three-game losing streak. Nicky Lopez had three hits and an RBI. Andrew Vaughn, Paul DeJong and Lenyn Sosa also drove in one run apiece.

Mark Canha drove in the lone Detroit run. The Tigers have scored just six runs in their last six games, going 1-5 during that stretch.

Detroit starter Kenta Maeda (2-4) gave up three runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked none.

Detroit had two baserunners in the first as Riley Greene blooped a two-out double and Canha walked. Gio Urshela flied out to end the inning.

The White Sox took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Luis Robert Jr. smacked an opposite-field double and stole third. Maeda retired the next two batters on a strikeout and groundout. DeJong then bounced a run-scoring single up the middle. Lee followed with another single before Lopez drove in DeJong with a double.

In the bottom of the inning, Wenceel Perez had a two-out double and Justyn-Henry Malloy walked. Jake Rogers then popped out on a 3-1 offering.

Chicago added to its lead in the fifth. Andrew Benintendi and Gavin Sheets singled to put runners on the corners before Maeda was pulled. Will Vest then gave up a run-scoring single to Vaughn.

The White Sox made it 5-0 in the sixth against Joey Wentz. Lee led off the inning with his seventh homer on a 3-2 count. Lopez then singled, stole second and scored on Sosa’s single.

The Tigers scored in the eighth when Matt Vierling singled and moved to third on Colt Keith’s double. Vierling scored on Canha’s groundout.
