Eugenio Suarez blasted a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning for the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, who stormed back for a 7-5 victory over the previously unbeaten New York Yankees on Tuesday night.
The Diamondbacks scored five in the eighth against the combination of Tim Hill and Mark Leiter Jr. (0-1).
Hill allowed an RBI single to Geraldo Perdomo. Leiter issued walks to Ketel Marte and Pavin Smith that set up Suarez’s sixth career grand slam.
Leiter was one strike away from leaving the bases loaded but Suarez got enough of a 2-2 splitter and the ball carried into the left field seats.
Earlier, Corbin Carroll hit a two-run homer off New York’s Will Warren and Corbin Burnes allowed four runs (two earned) in 4 1/3 innings in his debut for the Diamondbacks.
Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe homered in the third and fourth innings, respectively, off Burnes. New York scored two more in the fourth on a fielding error by first baseman Josh Naylor.
Warren, who made the team due to injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow surgery) and Luis Gil (lat), allowed two runs on one hit in five innings but the late collapse cost the right-hander his first career win. In his sixth career start, Warren struck out four and walked four.
Following a four-pitch walk to Geraldo Perdomo, Carroll lifted a 1-0 changeup into the back of the lower right field seats to give Arizona a 2-0 lead in the third.
Dominguez lined a 2-1 cutter into the right-center field seats to open the third and Volpe lifted a first-pitch cutter into the visiting bullpen beyond the left-center field fence in the fourth.
The Yankees took a 4-2 lead in the fifth when Austin Wells and Dominguez scored on Naylor’s high throw to Burnes on a grounder by Oswaldo Cabrera.
Four relievers followed Burnes with 4 2/3 scoreless frames.
Shelby Miller (1-0) pitched the seventh before Arizona’s second straight big eighth inning. Justin Martinez struck out Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Volpe after the Diamondbacks regained the lead.
A.J. Puk allowed Ben Rice’s two-out homer in the ninth before securing his first save.
