Ezequiel Tovar powers Rockies past Cardinals

Charlie Blackmon

Ezequiel Tovar went 4-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs to power the visiting Colorado Rockies past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 on Saturday afternoon.

Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored for the Rockies.

Colorado starting pitcher Ryan Feltner held the Cardinals to two hits in 5 1/3 innings, but he was victimized for four unearned runs. He struck out seven batters and walked one.

Reliever Victor Vodnik (1-0) earned the victory and Tyler Kinley earned his fourth save.

Matt Carpenter hit a home run and scored twice for the Cardinals, who have lost six of their last nine games.

Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Gibson allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings. He struck out seven batters and walked two.

Reliever Andrew Kittredge (0-3) allowed three runs in the seventh inning to take the loss.

The Rockies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Blackmon hit a single, raced to third on an error and scored on Tovar’s single.

Colorado increased its lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning on a homer by Tovar, a double by Elehuris Montero and an RBI single by Jake Cave.

Fielding mishaps in the bottom of the inning allowed the Cardinals to rally for a 4-3 lead.

Carpenter walked leading off and Dylan Carlson hit a single. One out later, Alec Burleson reached on an error to load the bases.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a potential double-play grounder to Montero at first base, but the resulting throwing error allowed three runs to score. Goldschmidt reached second base and scored on Nolan Arenado’s single.

Colorado regained the lead 6-4 in the seventh inning. Blackmon hit a leadoff double, Brenton Doyle hit an RBI single and Tovar smacked a two-run homer.

Carpenter cut the lead to 6-5 with his homer in the bottom of the inning.
