Giants outlast Mariners 10-9 in 11-inning tussle

Willy Adames lined a two-out, two-run, walk-off single in the 11th inning to rally the San Francisco Giants to a 10-9 victory over the visiting Seattle Mariners on Friday afternoon.

The teams had been deadlocked at 8-8 since the sixth before automatic runner Luke Raley scored on a wild pitch by Spencer Bivens (1-1) in the top of the 11th.

But the Giants bounced right back against Carlos Vargas (0-1), the Mariners’ ninth pitcher. After an infield out advanced Luis Matos to third, Tyler Fitzgerald walked and stole second, setting up Adames’ first-pitch hit to right field that gave San Francisco its fifth straight win.

The teams combined for 32 hits.

Making his second start as a Giant and his home debut, Justin Verlander couldn’t hold an early 3-1 lead, getting pulled with the bases loaded in a 3-3 tie in the third. Randy Rodriguez prevented further damage by recording the final two outs of the inning, leaving Verlander with three runs and five hits allowed in 2 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two.

Each team led by multiple runs before Matt Chapman homered and Patrick Bailey got an RBI on an infield out in a two-run sixth to produce the 8-8 tie.

After going up 1-0 in the top of the first, the Mariners trailed by two runs on two occasions and 6-5 after five innings. They moved in front by scoring three in their half of the sixth, with Jorge Polanco driving in the final run after an error on second baseman Fitzgerald allowed Seattle to take the lead.

Polanco, who finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs, smacked his second home run, a two-run shot off Lou Trivino, in the fifth inning.

The Giants built their early lead on the strength of two other two-run innings. LaMonte Wade Jr. produced a two-run double off Mariners starter Luis F. Castillo in the second, while Jung Hoo Lee and Heliot Ramos had RBI singles in the fourth.

Castillo — no relation to veteran right-hander Luis M. Castillo, who pitched Wednesday for the Mariners — was pulled after three innings, having allowed three runs and six hits in his first big-league start. He walked two and struck out two.

Adames had three hits and three RBIs for the Giants, who were just 5-for-27 with runners in scoring position before the shortstop’s game-ending hit. Wade, Ramos and Bailey also had three hits for San Francisco, with Wade scoring twice.

Julio Rodriguez had three hits, including his second home run of the season, and scored three times for the Mariners, who lost for the fifth time in seven games since an Opening Day win. Victor Robles and Raley added two hits apiece, while Cal Raleigh scored twice.
