All major league players have a patch on the back of their jerseys, at the neck and above the numbers, that depicts the MLB logo.
A few of them will look different this season.
The six major award winners from 2024 will have gold patches on their jerseys, marking their accomplishments as the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young Award winner and Rookie of the Year from their respective leagues.
Those are, of course, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees; Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves and Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers; and Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Yankees’ Luis Gil.
Called the Gold MLB logo patch, MLB is partnering with Topps, Fanatics and Nike on the promotion.
After the 2025 season, 10 authenticated game-worn patches from each player will be turned into exclusive autographed trading cards. Fans also can buy replica jerseys of the six players with the gold patches.
This is similar to the jersey patch rookie card of Paul Skenes that an 11-year-old Los Angeles boy randomly got in a pack of cards he received for Christmas. It currently is up for auction, with bidding reaching $550,000 as of Wednesday, The Athletic reported. The auction runs through March 20.
The patch will make its regular-season debut on Tuesday when the Ohtani and the Dodgers meet the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo to launch the season.
